On a legal invoice, the preview's quantity column carries hours and the rate column the hourly charge, with one line for every person who billed time to the matter. A filing fee or another expense covered for the client sits on a separate line at the amount spent, so the client can tell it from a fee. Name the matter in each description.
Before typing anything into the tax box, find out whether your state taxes legal services. Money held in trust and fees paid ahead of the work are outside this page; ask your state bar about them.
Worked example, with sample figures: 5 attorney hours on a contract review at $275.00 (5 × $275.00 = $1,375.00), 4 paralegal hours preparing documents at $90.00 (4 × $90.00 = $360.00) and a court filing fee of $85.00 paid for the client (1 × $85.00). The subtotal is $1,375.00 + $360.00 + $85.00 = $1,820.00, which the preview shows as the total while no tax is entered.
