How to Start a UX Design Business
Going independent as a UX designer, step by step: the work you'll sell, the paperwork, a case-study portfolio and the first project you bill.
UX design deals with how people use an app or a website. Start your UX business by deciding which parts of that work you'll sell. After that comes the set-up any small business needs. For pricing research, testing costs and extra screens, see the UX designer invoicing guide linked below.
BLS files this work under web developers and digital designers. Its profile (In the US, BLS, last modified August 27, 2026) says: "Digital designers develop, create, and test website or interface layout, functions, and navigation for usability." On schooling it says: "Educational requirements for web developers and digital designers vary, ranging from a high school diploma to a bachelor’s degree."
First invoice, sample figures only: a usability review of an existing app at a flat 1 × $900.00 plus 6 hours of wireframe revisions at 6 × $80.00 = $480.00 comes to $900.00 + $480.00 = $1,380.00. Use your own figures; these are only an illustration.
Step-by-step startup guide
Follow these steps to launch your ux designer business on solid footing.
- 1
Pick the UX work you'll offer
List the services you could offer, such as research, wireframes, prototypes and usability testing. Choose the ones you'll sell, and note which you'll hand to a developer or visual designer.
- 2
Gather case studies
Write up two or three projects: the problem, how you worked and what changed. A self-initiated redesign can fill a gap while client work is thin.
- 3
Decide how you'll trade
The SBA's launch guide (In the US, SBA, checked October 31, 2026) says: "If you conduct business as yourself using your legal name, you won’t need to register anywhere." For a studio name or an LLC, check the filing rules with your state government and the city or county where you work.
- 4
Sort out an EIN and banking
The SBA (In the US, SBA, checked October 31, 2026) says: "Your Employer Identification Number (EIN) is your business’s federal tax ID number." The IRS's EIN page (In the US, IRS, last reviewed or updated October 16, 2026) says: "You never have to pay a fee for an EIN."
- 5
Talk to an insurance agent
The SBA (In the US, SBA, checked October 31, 2026) says: "Speak to insurance agents to find out what kinds of coverage makes sense for your business."
- 6
Quote and bill the first project
Send an estimate that lists each phase, and invoice from it after the client says yes. Phase billing and testing costs are in the UX designer invoicing guide.
Tips for starting your ux designer business
- Name each client's folder after the project, so you can trace the feedback from every round.
- Keep part of every client payment in reserve. The IRS self-employment tax page (In the US, IRS, last reviewed or updated October 30, 2026) says: "The self-employment tax rate is 15.3%."
- Write down which screens a project includes, so anything new can be priced as extra work.
- Check with your state on sales tax for design services before adding it to an invoice.
